What is DEF?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is used in modern diesel engine applications to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the vehicle’s exhaust. DEF is a solution made of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. When injected into the exhaust system, DEF reacts with the NOx emissions and converts them into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor.

The use of DEF is required by law in many countries to meet emissions regulations. It is typically stored in a separate tank on the vehicle, and the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU) monitors the DEF level and injection rate to ensure that the emissions are within legal limits. DEF injection is typically done in the exhaust pipe, downstream of the engine and diesel particulate filter.
